A recent HSE inspection campaign has exposed alarming shortcomings in how many workplaces protect staff from excessive noise. The findings are especially relevant for the events sector, where high sound levels are part of daily life.

Key insights from the HSE report

The HSE’s latest inspection campaign found widespread shortfalls in how noise protection is being managed across high-noise workplaces:

  • Over three-quarters of employees did not know how to store, inspect or report faults in their hearing protection equipment.

  • Around two-thirds (63%) had not received guidance on the importance of wearing protection continuously when exposed to harmful noise levels.

  • Almost all employers (95%) had not checked whether staff wearing hearing protection could still detect crucial warning signals such as fire alarms or reversing vehicles.

These gaps aren’t just regulatory failings, they translate into very real risks of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), reduced situational awareness, and even safety hazards when alarms or warnings aren’t heard.

Why events are especially at risk

Noise exposure can be a significant consideration in live event environments, particularly where amplified sound or long working hours are involved. Roles such as stage crew, security, and bar staff may be affected depending on their location and duration on site.

Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations, employers have a duty to assess and manage noise levels to help protect staff health.

That’s where a specialist noise assessment becomes vital, not only for compliance, but for protecting your team’s health and ensuring operations run smoothly without unseen liabilities.

How Event Noise Management helps

Our Noise at Work Assessment service is designed specifically for the challenges of live events and venues.

  • Measuring, monitoring & managing: We deploy advanced sound measurement equipment across your event space to map where levels are excessive or pose risk.

  • Risk identification & recommendations: We don’t just hand over data, we analyse it to identify staff exposure, propose mitigation and tailor solutions to your layout.

  • Staff training & awareness: We help embed noise awareness in your team, how to spot risks, correct PPE usage, and maintain safe practices.

  • Documentation & audit evidence: All assessments and recommendations are documented, providing evidence for compliance audits or regulatory checks.

In short, we blend compliance with a pragmatic, event-tailored approach to protecting your people.

Bridging the gaps the HSE found

By engaging with an expert noise assessment, you’re taking a proactive approach, managing risks before they escalate and demonstrating a clear commitment to your team’s welfare.

With the HSE highlighting widespread gaps in noise management, it’s a timely reminder for event organisers to review existing controls and training. A comprehensive Noise at Work Assessment is an important step in strengthening your overall health and safety strategy.

Together, we’ll help make sure your events remain both memorable and responsibly managed.
